Road Trip to Florida - Yours To Discover®
Just before Christmas we packed up the car and headed south. We ended up stuck on the interstate in upstate New York for nearly 3 hours while they cleared a pile up due to freezing rain. We counted at least 30 cars being towed north on the interstate. We then made our way down through Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and into Virginia where we crossed the amazing Chesapeake Bay Bridge, buying another lighthouse souvenir at the pier. It was awesomg going from having the heater on to rolling down the windows and opening the sunroof! Driving through North Carolina swamp making time, I could have sworn I saw a monster truck as we flew by; so we doubled back and found Grave Digger's Dungeon. Next was on to the Wright Brothers Monument in Kitty Hawk, then we bought a hammock at Nags Head Hammocks and continued down the coast and stayed the night in Myrtle Beach. In the morning we visited historic Charleston. At Jacksonville we got on A1A heading south along the coast through Georgia and into Florida. Christmas Eve we spent in Rockledge and we were lucky enough (due to maintenance) to have our room upgraded to their best jacuzzi suite. Christmas Day Cape Canaveral was closed so we continued down the scenic A1A through West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and into Miami. We stayed at a hotel near the airport which happened to be in the flight path for one of the landing runways; every 15 minutes a massive roar and all the car alarms in the parking lot would go off. Luckily the flights subsided around midnight and we got some sleep. In the morning we found Miami Ink, snapped a photo and headed into the Everglades. Lots of wildlife to photo in the swamps! On the way out we toured through Marco Island, Naples, visited Sanibel Island and stayed the night in Fort Myers. In the morning we grabbed our Starbucks and continued up the coast. We toured Boca Grande, Manasota Key, Casey Key, Sarasota, Longboat Key, drove over the Sunshine Sky-way bridge, visited the Mullet Key, Fort Desoto and settled in early into ocean-view balcony suite at St. Pete Beach. We put our feet up on the railing and watched an incredible sunset to the sound of a great live band playing next door. Early the next morning we took a long walk in the surf and took in an almost equally incredible sunrise. We continued on up the coast through Treasure Island, Redington Beach, Clearwater Beach, Clearwater, Honeymoon Island and Tarpon Springs. At Anclote Park we stopped to photograph a bald eagle and some peacocks, then it was off to Orlando for a night. Palm trees decorated in Christmas lights, Christmas trees; Orlando was very festive. The next day we toured Cape Canaveral and headed home, drove over the New River Gorge Bridge (2nd highest in the world) with short stops at Mount Nebo and Sutton Lake dams. Christmas in Florida was a great idea!
